Shrek 5 has been the subject of ongoing rumor and speculation for some time, and now the head of animation studio Illumination has said the movie actually happen. CEO Chris Meledandri, who is a creative partner for Shrek studio DreamWorks, told that it is his hope that Mike Meyers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey), and Cameron Diaz (Fiona) return for Shrek 5 to reprise their characters.

"We anticipate the cast coming back," Meledandri said, though he cautioned that it's still early days and no deals have been signed as of yet. "Talks are starting now, and every indication that we've gotten is there's tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return."

Meledandri, who oversaw The Super Mario Bros. Movie, said the situation with Shrek is not that dissimilar to Mario in that the idea is to take "core elements" that audiences love about a property and try to honor those with a new installment.
